February 2: Central line reaches Kalamazoo from Battle Creek. [MCR-75/MDOT/AAD]

March 28: The state authorizes the sale of the Central line, and it is paid $2,000,000 for it. The Michigan Central Railroad if formed by Bostonian John Murray Forbes and others. [RWC/AAD]

May 9: State authorizes sale of Southern line for $500,000 ($650,000 less than cost) and the Michigan Southern Railroad is formed. [AAD]
- The building of new railroads comes to a virtual halt until 1856 when the Railroad Incorporation Act was passed and signed into law. [AAD]
