Article: Logging Weather Has Been Good (1906)
From the Saginaw News, March 20, 1906
March has been exceptionally favorable for logging operations in the eastern part of the lower peninsula of Michigan. And on the whole the winter has been a good one with not too much snow and since February 1 steady cold weather. There is still considerable snow up north and active hauling is in progress. Some loggers have already secured a stock and have broken camp, while others will haul as long as the snow permits. Many of the larger firms log the year through, but do the heaviest portion of the work during the winter months.
The Saginaw river mills get logs through the year by rail. A great many small operators have put in logs this winter owing to the good prices and sell the same to the big manufacturing firms.
There are many portable saw mills operated in the district which manufacture from 500,000 to 3,000,000 feet of lumber each, and in the aggregate these plants work up a large quantity of logs. It is estimated that not less than 30,000,000 feet were manufactured at these mills in the district between Bay City and Cheboygan last year. The lumber finds a ready sale and at good prices.
An estimate of the log output of the firms named is given herewith:
