Notes
Time Line
1894. A very sad accident happened this morning on the Au Sable & Northwestern railroad. When the train reached the seven-mile hill on its way from McKinley to Au Sable, Barney Hebner, a brakeman on the train, after he had put on the brakes on the passenger car, attempted to examine what are called the "skidders" on the logging cars, and in so doing slipped and fell under the car, the train passing over him, cutting one leg off at the middle of the thigh and the other just below the knee. He was brought to Au Sable, where Drs. White and Ruffe amputated and dressed the legs. The unfortunate man is about 30 years of age and is married. He is now lying at the Union Hotel in Oscoda in a very precarious state. Dr. White stated that it is very doubtful if he would live. [DFP-1894-0904]
