Interlocking: Lansing, MI - Cedar Tower

Cedar Street Interlocking Tower was located on the Grand Trunk Western main line at the crossing of the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Lansing Branch.

Time Line

1904. the Railroad Commissioner approves a first class interlocking at the crossings of the GTW, MCRR and LSMS at Lansing. This was an all electric crossing installed by the Taylor Signal Co. [MCR-1904]

1923. In the NYC time table, this location was known as "Lansing" and located at mp.58.8, 0.3 miles south of Kalamazoo Street and 1.3 miles south of the Lake Shore station at mp.60.

1935. The interlocking just east of the GTW station, at Cedar street, is a G.R.S. all-electric plant controlling the interlocking facilities for a crossing of the Grand Trunk with the New York Central and the Michigan Central. The crossover used for returning eastbound trains from the station to the eastward track is part of the Cedar Street plant. Traffic locking circuits are provided for the westward track between Washington A venue tower and Cedar Street tower, push-button release facilities being provided. [RSE-1937-04]

1984. The Conrail Saginaw secondary had a three track interchange yard here with the GTW in the southeast quadrant of the crossing. This was just north of the Red Cedar river. [ZTS]
