Location: Atlantic Mine, MI - COPR/A&LS Crossing
This was the crossing of the Copper Range railroad main line and the Atlantic & Lake Superior railroad line from Atlantic Mine to the mills near Redridge along Lake Superior. There were also wye tracks at this location. This is in Houghton County, about 1 mile north of Mill Mine Junction.
Photo Info: Looking west on the Atlantic & Lake Superior railroad at the crossing of the Copper Range railroad. If you look closely, you can see the diamond was actually removed and the A&LS was no longer used their line. This is from 1916.
Notes
The A&LS railroad was built here first, around 1893. The Copper Range Railroad was built across the A&LS around 1899. It does not appear that this crossing was interlocked. Instead, it was protected by a swing gate, which is shown in the above photo.
The wyes at this location were likely so that A&LS mines and mills could receive coal delivery from the Copper Range dock (on Portage Lake) and the COPR coal storage tower at Mill Mine Junction.
