Location: Calumet, MI - DSS&A / Mineral Range Facilities

The Mineral Range railroad was the first common-carrier railroad to arrive in the Calumet area. It was soon controlled by the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic railroad. The newcomer, Hancock and Calumet (H&C) railroad was built into Calumet from Hancock and Lake Linden area and was also controlled by the DSS&A.

The DSS&A had a roundhouse in Calumet.

Time Line

1912. January 31. At 10:45 o'clock last night, Engine 190 of the South Shore road took a notion to take a trip on its own account, and after steaming out of the roundhouse dropped into the turntable pit. Six other locomotives used during the day for hauling freight and rock trains were put out of commission as No. 190 blocked their exit from the roundhouse. A wrecking outfit at Marquette was wired for and it arrived at 8 o'clock this morning. The crew immediately got to work and the foreman informed the News that by 5 o'clock this afternoon No. 190 and the other engines would again be ready for duty.

On leaving the roundhouse No. 190, weighing 110 tons, crashed into the pit of the turntable, head foremost. Considerable damage was done. Two other locomotives from the Hancock and Houghton areas were requisitioned and the transportation of freight and rock proceeded today. The news of the wreck was soon noised about town and a large crowd of onlookers witnessed the work of the wrecking crew. [CN-1912-0131]
