Time Line

1888. The foundry of Hodges' Lake Superior Iron works in Hancock was entirely destroyed by fire last night. Loss, $15,000; insurance: $5,000. [DFP-1888-1027] Described in other articles as a "casting" works.

1892. The molding room of the Lake Superior Iron Works is shut down and the men are out on strike. Chas. J. Hodge, the proprietor, cut the wages of the men ten cents each per day. The management won't give in and the men will probably have to. Everything is smooth in the other departments. Seventeen men are out. [DFP-1892-0105]

1900. The Hodge Iron Company, organized under Illinois laws, with headquarters in Chicago, today took over the Lake Superior Iron Works Co. The plant was owned and operated by Chas. J. Hodge, defendant in the recent litigation in Detroit (over ownership), and does an enormous business, shipping mining machinery to all points of the United States and Canada. [DFP-1900-0803]
