Location: Dollar Bay, MI

Dollar Bay is a location on Portage Lake, between Hancock and Lake Linden in Osceola Township, Houghton County. It was founded in 1887 according to local officials. The location was on both the Hancock & Calumet railroad (later Mineral Range, DSS&A, and SOO) and the Copper Range extension north of Hancock. Dollar Bay was 2.5 miles north of Ripley. It was the home to the Arcadian and Franklin copper ore stamp mills.

Time Line

1917. This was originally platted as the Village of Clark. Later changed to Dollar Bay.

1910. October 10. By the overturning of a big locomotive on the Mineral Range at Dollar Bay, John Miller, aged 32, the fireman, was killed and the engineer was seriously injured. Miller was pinned beneath the engine and scalded to death. The wreck was caused by an open switch and the engine turned a complete somersault. [DET-1910-1010]
