Location: Red Jacket (Calumet), MI
Red Jacket, named after a celebrated Indian chief, was the original name for what is now Calumet. It was likely named by Edwin Hulbert, president of the Hulbert Mining Company. Hulbert erected a log boarding house here around 1856. The original name of Calumet was used by what is presently Laurium. In 1929, Red Jacket was changed to Calumet, and the old Calumet became Laurium.

Time Line
1888. March. The snow drifts on the Mineral Range railroad between Calumet and Red Jacket are something tremendous. In clearing the track, one man has stood on the ground and handed his shovelful of snow as high as he could to another man above him, and the latter to another man still higher, who threw it over the bank.
