Location: Tula, MI

Tula was a location on the Duluth, South Shore & Atlantic main line about six miles east of Thomaston in Gogebic County. It was located at milepost 282.1 in Section 21 T48N-R44W. [USGS-1955][DSSM]

Time Line

1966. June. A westbound Soo Line freight train No. 41 was involved in an accident near the M-28 crossing just west of Tula. 18 railroad cars were piled up and the cause is not known. No one was hurt. [EDG-1966-0602] The mishap took place about 10:30 a.m. when a 108-car freight train apparently derailed causing the 18 middle cars t pile up like match sticks. The cause of the wreck is believed to be faulty track beds in the swampy area. The locale creates an annual hazard due to swampy terrain. Four men were riding on the train at the time of the mishap, two in the engine and two in the caboose. The train was traveling from Superior to Ewen. One car was loaded with bulk cement, one with machinery, six with coal and 10 were empty. Track was torn up for about 200 feet. [IDG-1966-0603]
