Station: Tioga, MI

Tioga was a station stop on the DSS&A line between Nestoria and Sidnaw. It was located about five miles west of Nestoria in Baraga County.

1891. October. Another wreck on the DSS&A railroad occurred Monday evening about five miles west of Nestoria. In some manner, the chains of a east-bound log train got loose, dragging on the ties until crossing a bridge when they caught on the cross ties, tearing a part of the structure out and derailing a part of the train. The EB passenger train was delayed in consequence and passengers were transferred to another train east of the wreck. Among those transferred were two typhoid fever patients who were being sent to a hospital at Marquette. 

One of the typhoid fever patients related a most pitiful tale. We was a teamster in a lumber camp and lerft last week to go to Marquette, as he was suffering from the fever. He stop[ped at Matchwood to catch the early train and while there he was robbed of all the cash he had, some $47, and a certificate of deposit for $20. He started back to the camp to borrow sufficient money to continue his journey to Marquette, but on the way became delirious and wandered around the woods four or five days when he was found by some lumbermen who sent him to Marquette. Matchwood must be a tough hole if it allows typhoid fever patients to be robbed without making an effort to punish the offenders. [LAS-1891-1024]
