Notes

Time Line

1894. There was a wreck on the Alpena & Northern railroad Monday near Bolton, and six long timber cars were demolished. No one was injured. [AAN-1894-0228]

1900. May. The town of Bolton, a lumber station 20 miles north of Alpena, is surrounded by fire and a telephone message from there says the sawmill and timber products will surely be destroyed. A few miles north of there W.L. and H.D. Churchill have a skidway of several million feet of hemlock logs which caught fire this morning. A fire engine was sent from Alpena and it is thought the flames can be extinguished. The fire on the Valentine Lake branch, 60 miles from here, has subsided this afternoon. A log train coming down last night stopped three times to remove trees that had burned down and fallen across the track. It threatens rain tonight. [DFP-1900-0502]
