Alger County was detacherd from Schoolcraft County, set off and organized in 1885. It was named for lumber baron Russell A. Alger. The county is located on the south shore of Lake Superior with Munising, the county seat, about in the middle of the county.

Notes

Current population (2020) is 8,842.

The county was served by the Duluth, South Shore and Atlantic railway, as well as the Munising railway (later LS&I) as well as many logging railroads.

The county has one city (Munising), a village (Chatham) and eight townships. Grand Island Township is an island north of Munising.
