Station: Saxon, WI

Saxon was a small town along the railroad west of the Montreal Mine in Iron County. Both the Wisconsin Central (later Soo Line) and the C&NW served the town.

1966. Local Soo Line officials note that with their present level of business, trackage for meeting of trains is inadequate and must be improved for satisfactory operation. [Memo to Soo Line Superintendent]

1972. The Saxon depot is being razed. Both the C&NW and Soo Line shared this single facility. Today, few trains pass through the town. [IDG-1972-0504]

1975. A Soo Line freight train derailed near the Saxon overpass directly under US-2. The eastbound train was travelling 23 miles per hour when the cars derailed. Hundreds of yards of tracks were torn up. The cars contained limestone and coal. The cause can't be determined yet and no one was hurt. The eight cars that derailed were in the middle section of the 39  car train. A wrecker from Stevens Point and crew of 16 is enroute to rerail the cars and repair the track. [IDG-1975-0624]
