Location: Detroit, MI - The Wayne Hotel

Though we don't usually cover hotels in Michigan, the Wayne Hotel is an exception. This hotel, which was built on Third Street in Detroit at Jefferson, was across the street from the MC Third Street depot, just down the street from the Fort Street Union Depot, and next door to the Detroit & Cleveland Navigation Company docks at the foot of Third Street.

Almost everyone who came into Detroit via Lake Erie passenger ships stayed at the Wayne, while awaiting their railroad trip west via the MC or the railroads at Fort Street Union Depot.

The Wayne Hotel in Detroit, Michigan opened in 1887. It was designed by Gordon W. Lloyd and had 187 rooms across five floors. The hotel could accommodate 350 guests and daily rates ranged from $2 to $3.50. 

The Wayne Hotel was the center of Detroit's social life at the time. It was also known as the "Haven for Honeymooners". The Wayne Hotel was located at the corner of W Jefferson Avenue and 3rd Street. [GGAI]

This was on the site of the former Joe Louis hockey arena in Detroit.
