The Michigan Carbon Works was established on the Rouge River in 1880 and opened in 1882. It was located behind Delray Tower and recreived rail service from the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern and Wabash railroads. The works produced glue, animal charcoal from animal bones. Later, they made buttons and knife handles. In 1888, it received about 4,000 boxcar loads of bones annually. [MH-2022-9/10]
