Station: Ingalls, MI

Ingalls was settled about 1858 and became a station stop on the Chicago & North Western railroad when it later came through the area in 1872. [MPN] The location is about two miles south of Stephenson.

Notes

This is in Mellon Township in Section 35 of T35N-R27W. The railroad had a bay window depot here, a mail crane, as well as a short passing siding and several other siding spurs. [CNWV-1917]

Time Line

1895. The Italians working on the Wisconsin & Michigan railway near Ingalls struck for more than the 60 cents a day they were getting. This was refused them and after loading up with whisky they proceeded to enforce their demand with the aid of some pickaxes that were left handy for them. With these in hand they made an onslaught on the foremen, chasing them into the woods, after which they repaired to town and loaded up some more. Two of the rioters drowned while crossing on logs from a tent saloon on an island. [RTR-1895-0223]

1900. A telephone message from Ingalls late this afternoon states that several farm houses and barns near that place have been destroyed by a forest fire. [DFP-1900-0502]

1918. The C&NW had a station agent operator here on the night shift. [TRT]

1930: April 4. The Michigan Public Utilities Commission denies a request by the C&NW to change this station from a staffed agency to a prepay station. The Commission rules that sufficient revenue exists here to justify the agent. [MPUC-1930]

1931. February 13. The MPUC allows the C&NW to discontinue Ingalls station as an agency station and to continue to use same as a prepay station with caretaker. [MPUC-1931]
