The Lake Superior & Ishpeming railroad built this wood dock at Presque Isle at the start of the LS&I railroad which served Cleveland Iron Company and the Lake Superior Mine.
Time Line
1896. This original LS&I ore dock was constructed of wood and had a 36,000 ton capacity.
1912. This dock is replaced by the concrete and steel dock.
1960's. The period of change from raw ore to taconite pellets occurred between the 1950's and the 1980's. During winter periods, the raw ore would often freeze in the storage chutes in the dock. To fix this, pellet ore would be loaded into the chutes first, followed by iron ore. When loading ships, the taconite pellet ore would get the process moving followed by the raw ore. [LSIOR]
