The Lake Shore & Michigan Southern came to Kalamazoo in 1867. It was the second railroad to build through Kalamazoo, after the Michigan Central arrived in 1848.

Time Line

1887. The LS&MS had a passenger station on the northwest corner of Porter Street, east of Main Street. This depot was gone by 1891. The road also had a water tank about 1/2 block north of the MC crossing on Porter Street. [SBM-1887, 1891]

1891. It appears that the LS&MS used the Michigan Central depot here. It was accessed by a wye in the southwest quadrant of the MC crossing. [SBM-1891]

1891. The LS&MS had a 3-stall roundhouse and turntable just south of the MC crossing. It was accessed off of the wye. The LS&MS also had a freight house just south of the E. Main Street crossing. [SBM-1891]
