Officials of the Milwaukee road have issued instructions to their engineers to reduce speed on an eight-mile stretch near Parks' Siding on the Iron-Baraga county line, where 15 deer have been killed this season by trains.
It is believed salt dropped on the right-of-way from refrigerator cars attracts deer to the tracks, and the railroad company has taken steps to remove traces of the salt. Conservation officers say that deer hesitate to leave the tracks when trains approach because heavy swamps border the right-of-way on both sides. [Herald Press-7/29/1941]
