Railroad: Great Lakes Central Railroad

Ann Arbor + Penn Central → TSBY + MIGN → Great Lakes Central railroad → Continues

Built: Great Lakes Central designated as operator of former Ann Arbor Railroad and former GR&I lines north of Cadillac.

Notes

The Great Lakes Center extends from Osmer (just north of Ann Arbor) to Cadillac. They also have branches from Cadillac west to near Yuma, and from Cadillac north to Petoskey, and from Walton Junction to Traverse City.

Much of this line is owned by the State of Michigan with the GLC being the designated operator.

Time Line

2022. The "Great Lakes Corridor Improvement Project" by MDOT provides up to $21 million for the rehab of 4.25 miles of new rail, elimination of joints on an additional 41 miles, replacing of 11 bridges and culverts and installation of 30,000 ties on mainline and siding track. This will eliminate 16 slow orders covering a critical 45-mile section of the 260-mile mainline corridor. Michigan DOT and the Class II GLC will provide a 50% match. [MRF-2022-08]
