Time Line

1880. December. The Elkhart, Niles & Lake Michigan railroad, the proposed Michigan extension of the Cincinnati, Wabash and Michigan railroad, yesterday received formal notice from the MC that they would oppose the crossing of their road by the proposed new one, based on a section of the MC charger granted about 35 years ago, prohibiting any road entering the State from the east or south approaching the Central nearer than five miles. [NREP-1880-1209]

1880. December. The CW&M railroad furnishes the following resolutions adopted by the Board of Directors: Resolved that this company will extend the CW&M railway from its present terminus, Goshen, IN to Benton Harbor, MI, a distance of about 52 miles, on the following conditions: First, the necessary right of way for the entire distance to be furnished this company free of cost; Second, a donation of one hundred thousand dollars ($100,000) in cash, to be paid to the Company as shall be mutually satisfactory. 1882. June. The first train from Cincinnati will arrive in Niles at 12 o'clock noon, and leaving the same day at 3 p.m. The station in this city (Niles) for the present will be in the house lately occupied by Mr. Rounds. [NREP-1882-0629]

1882. Line opened from Goshen, IN via Niles  to Benton Harbor. [MCR-1916]

1892. Controlled by Big Four railroad.

1913. Merged into the Big Four railroad. [MCR-1916]
