Railroad Man: Hoyt, Jesse

Jesse Hoyt, one of the most prominent business men of this city (New York) died to-day. (August 14, 1882). He has been largely interested in the grain and railway interests of the West, and was at the time of his death a director of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway.

MILWAUKEE, August 14. The death or Jesse Hoyt, of New York, is announced by a private dispatch. Deceased was a partner of the elevator firm of Angus Smith & Co., of [Milwaukee], and largely identified with the commercial interests of the Northwest, especially Wisconsin and Michigan. His death will be a terrible blow for the Milwaukee & Northern Railroad, as deceased was heavily interested and very active in its development he was largely interested in the lumber and salt trade of Saginaw, Michigan, a leading spirit in the Flint & Pere Marquette Railroad, and President of the Wisconsin & Michigan Railroad, under whose auspices the Ontonagon & Brule river Railroad is now being constructed. He had been a member of the firm of Angus Smith & Co. since 1858. [DFP-1882-0815]
