Location: N 1/2 Sec. 11 of T47N-R29W. Includes Humboldt which was E 1/2-NW and this includes Baron mine which was the south 40 acres of Humboldt mine.

Owned by: Edward Breitung, then later by Humboldt Mining Co., then by Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co. with Ford Motor Co. which had an interest.

Produced: Iron Ore, hard, steel gray, non-bessemer.

Method: Underground, worked by stoping method, greatest depth 730 feet.

Railroad connection: M&O, then DSS&A to Marquette dock.

Until: 1920

Lifetime Production: 1,100,741 tons of iron ore shipped from 1865 to 1920

Notes

1,000 acres. NE part of T47-R29, just south of the MH&O right of way.

A railroad branch was connected with the MH&O to the Edwards Mine which was located a few miles west.

Time Line

1868. This mine is now largely served by the M&O. [DSS]

1876. Leased to Humboldt Mining Co. in 1876.

1953. A low-grade ore beneficiation plant expected to begin production late in 1953.
