Also known as the Stambaugh mine. The Iron River Mine was located in Stambaugh and was part of the Riverton Group. Later Riverton Mine.


Time Line

1890. This mine is owned by the Schlesinger Syndicate of Milwaukee. [DD=1890-0823]

1890. Charles Johnson was accidently killed in No. 3 shaft of the Iron River (Stambaugh) mine by a fall of rock and ore. He was a trammer at the mine.

1891. Reported by Senator Fleshiem of Menominee..."That was the trouble with the Stambaugh mine, which is owned by the Schlesinger syndicate. Its ore had too much phosphorus and too little metallic iron, and although it was a very productive mine shipping over 150,000 tons last year, it  has been abandoned."

1891. February. The mine, a member of the Schleshinger gropo has been shut down. [IWT-1891-0207]
