Notes

Ashland Mine (and the Ashland location) was purchased by the Cleveland-Cliffs Mining Company in 1901 and they owned it until 1913. Ownership was sold to the Hayes Mining Company which owned it from 1913 to 1926. This mine and townsite is located in the south 1/4 of Section 22 of T47N-R47W. This was the second largest mine on the Gogebic range in 1902. It produced 301,824 tons of ore in 1902. It was an underground mine.

160 acres. This mine was the western most mine in the City of Ironwood in 1952. West of the Townsite Mine and North Aurora mine.

Time Line

1935. September. The Soo Line railroad has razed the old trestle on the former Ashland mine spur track at the point where it crosses the C&NW lines west of Lowell street. The Soo Line is abandoning the spur as access to the south yard and the "belt" line can be had over the North Western tracks, which have been jointly used by the two railroads since their ore pooling agreement went into effect several years ago.
