Produced: Iron Ore, soft, blue, non-Bessemer and Bessemer. Some crushed.

Method: Underground, worked by sub-level caving. Depth: 1,796 feet.

Railroad connection: C&NW to Escanaba ore dock.

Until: 1893, closed due to flooding.

Lifetime Production: 1,001,518 tons from 1880-1894.

Time Line

1891. June. Electric signals in mines is becoming more general in the iron and copper country. The operators of the Ludington mine in Iron Mountain have must completed putting in one of the best systems in the Upper Peninsula. [DD-1891-0627]

1893. Work of pumping out the Hamilton-Ludington mines has been stopped until the ore market warrants a further outlay of money. The company has expended $80,000 in pumping. The mine has an inflow of 900 gallons per minute. [LAS-1893-0729]

1894. Became part of the Chapin Mine after 1894.

1927. The Oliver Iron Mining Co. employs 600 men at the Chapin mine in Iron Mountain. The mine has been shipping stock pile. The Ludington is now the production shaft for the engire Chapin Mine. [MCH-1927-0902]
