Time Line
1922. April. The possibility of Henry Ford opening up or doing exploratory work at the Taylor mine, seven miles south of L'Anse, seems certain this spring, with A. Richards, superintendent of the Imperial Mine at Michigamme in charge of the work. The mine is situated on the NW 1/4 of Section 9, T49N-R33W. It is the most westerly mine operated in Baraga County. Ore was first discovered in 1872, no effort being made to mine until 1878, when a gang of men was employed to sink shafts, cross cutting and cleaning out the old shaft made at the time of discovery. The east shaft was opened in 1880. The work was started on the foot wall side on the north and worked over to the hanging wall on the south. A pocket 65 feet wide in its widest place was found under a stgripping of six feet.
A shaft west of the old pit is down in ore 125 feet. The deposit at this place is from 40 to 60 feet wide and has been opened by drifts and cross cuts. Another shaft was sunk to the west.
The the early 1880's much ore was shipped, a spur being built into the mine from the main line of the South Shore railroad. In the 1890's considerable exploratory work was done in that vicinity. Graphite has also been mined near here, the Detroit Graphite and the Hathaway Graphite companies each getting out many tons, most of which was taken from the Michigan Iron Land and Lumber Company's lands. The ore found at the Taylor mine is a fine bessemer hematite. [LAS-1922-0407]
