The Lafayette Mining Company was organized in 1861 to explore the former Ohio and Isle Royale Mine near Silver City in Ontonagon County. A company report stated that a huge vein was thought to run across the property. During exploration of the vein, numerous silver specimens were recovered. In 1863, the shaft previously sunk by the Ohio and Isle Royale was cleared and worked by the Lafayette. The formations at the Lafayette were the same as the Carp Lake Mine. The mine was a major producer during the Civil War but was abandoned in 1866. Between 1866 and 1906, the mine was worked under tribute. Today some pits and artifacts remain, but are not to be disturbed as this is State Park property. [MINDAT]
