This mine was located at Clifton, an early mining town in Keweenaw County.

Time Line

1847. The schooner Napoleon, Captain McKay, came down (to Lac La Belle) from the Cliff mine on the 29th, with 80 tons of native copper in rock, for the Pittsburgh and Boston Company. [DFP-1847-0818]

1848. July. The Propeller Independence arrived at Saut. Ste. Marie on the 13th inst., after a quick trip of six days to Eagle River, via Isle Royale, bringing down with her some 30 passengers and 108 tons of copper, principally in mass from the Cliff Mine. [DFP-1848-0719]

1851. Reports at the Cliff mine that a single sheet of copper, 40' long, 18' high and 6" to 3' thick has been discovered, probably weighing 300 tons. The mine continues to be called the "wonder of the world". [DFP-1851-0502]
